Overflow's Roles and Permissions feature makes it easy for you to determine the level of access each individual within your organization should have to your Overflow Dashboard.
Where to find the feature:
- Go to your organization's settings under your name by using the dropdown option on the top right hand side:
- Select the Users tab within Organization Settings
Adding A New User
Click Invite Users. Enter the individual's email, role, and permissions. Your new user will receive an email prompting them to complete their account access.
Removing A User:
- Find the user that you would like to remove and click the ellipsis at the far right of the item.
- Select "Remove User."
Setting Permissions:
To establish custom permission levels per admin, first choose which role they should have, either Editor or View Only.
- Editor: is able to change and manipulate data within your Overflow Dashboard.
- View Only: is only able to see or read the data and download reports.
Then, select which components of the Dashboard that individual should be able to either edit or view, depending on the role you selected. Note: if you give a user edit permission, they will be able to change any data within the components they have access to. If you don't select a component for a user, they will neither be able to view nor edit that component.
Examples of use cases:
Scenario 1:
Let's say that you have someone who is a volunteer for your organization and they help you enter checks and cash donations. In this case, you may not want them to view all of your contributions or donor information, but they need to be able to access our Manual Deposits feature.
To allow for this permission type, first set them as an Editor and then select Manual Deposits under the Permissions column. This user will now only be able to view and make changes within the Manual Deposits component.
Scenario 2:
Let's say you have a leader in your organization who simply needs to see the contributions that are coming in. They want to explore analytics, but they may not need to access and change the contributions data. In that case, you can set them to be View Only and give them access to Analytics and Contributions.
Analytics:
Contributions:
Scenario 3:
Let's say that you have someone on your marketing team that needs to be able to update your campaigns or funds as your fundraising priorities shift. In that case, you can make them an editor of only the Campaigns feature. This gives them the ability to create, remove, and edit Campaigns as needed. They will not see anything else on your dashboard. If you do not select anything else for an editor permission, they will not be able to view it.
Scenario 4:
Let's say that you have a marketing person who wants to also be able to update your logo and change the verbiage in your Acknowledgment Letter. In that case, you would need to give them access to Organization Settings. However, please note that by granting a user access to your organization settings, they will also be able to view and edit ALL tabs within Organization Settings, including your financial information.
If you have any questions about the information above, or feedback that you would like to present to our team, we would love to hear from you! You can reach us by emailing support@overflow.co.

Success on Overflow means that giving is a celebration for your donors and they keep coming back to give again and again. It also means that your team spends less time than ever before administering donations. But first, we need to get the donations flowing.
How do we do that?
Introducing Overflow’s Four Pillars of Success. Each of these pillars is foundational to encouraging your donors to give through the Overflow platform. By implementing these pillars, you too can see thousands of dollars donated over a weekend and a 65% increase in overall donations.
The Four Pillars of Success
- Pave the pathway to give
- Share it with your people
- Non-cash for the big ask
- Consistently, everywhere
Let’s dive in to what each of these mean for your organization.
#1: Pave the pathway to give
Some giving pages feel like a bumpy road with unexpected turns and the occasional man-sized pothole that swallows you whole. Giving to your organization should be easy - a paved, straight road leading to one conclusion: generosity! People can only donate to your organization if they can find the way to give that makes the most sense for them.
This is the first and most important pillar because it sets the foundation for the rest. Here are a few considerations as you pave the donation pathway for your givers:
#1. Do you have the Overflow button live?
This is a basic first step, but absolutely an important one!
#2: How many clicks does it take a donor to get to your give page?
Hint: it should be one! We recommend a “Give” button on the top navigation bar throughout your website.
#3: Are donors presented with multiple ways to give?
Your giving page should make it easy to give all different kinds of assets so that donors can give in the way that makes the most sense for them. Keep this page simple and clear. If you need to present more information, consider creating separate pages dedicated to educating donors about that particular asset type.
#4: Do donors understand which giving option is best for them?
For cash givers, this might mean highlighting that Overflow offers low-fee credit/debit/ACH giving.
For stock and crypto donations, make sure to emphasize the tax benefits of giving appreciated assets.
You’ll immediately know how smooth of a giving pathway you have by analyzing the traffic to your webpage. Simply log in to your Overflow Dashboard and go to the Donor Analytics section. If you aren’t seeing the page views you’d like, donors may be having a hard time finding your donate page - or may not know it exists! Use these tips and tricks to maximize each page view.
#2. Share it with your people
You know the ones. The loyal supporters you can always count on to give when it means the most. For churches, these are your core givers, your Kingdom Builders, your Legacy team. For nonprofits, these are your major donors - the high-net-worth individuals you’ve built relationships with over the long term. These are the types of people that already are inspired by your mission and want to support. They also are the ones that have non-cash assets to give. Don’t be afraid to share with them, and remind them again and again, that you offer ways for them to donate stock and crypto online. And if you have Overflow’s cash platform, they may even want to transition their offline check giving to a more convenient debit, credit, or ACH donation with low fees.
Within your Overflow Dashboard, you can analyze your donor demographics using the Analytics section. You’ll be able to see things like new recurring cash donors and top givers. You can share personally and directly with this group of givers about why you chose Overflow and how it can benefit them. They will be thankful you are creating opportunities for them to maximize their tax savings, and minimize fees for your organization!
Check out our major donor game plan for ideas on how to engage this audience.
#3. Non-cash for the big ask
90% of individuals hold their wealth in non-cash assets, which means their biggest gifts come from their stock portfolio or crypto wallet, not the cash in their bank account. When making a big ask, whether for a capital campaign, gala, or a new vision for your organization, make sure your donors know they can easily give stock and crypto online. This will make all the difference in how much they can give.
Case in point: one of our partners had a major donor move from giving $1000 checks at their annual gala to $10,000 stock gifts because he had more to give from that pocket. When this story is repeated throughout your donor base, you can raise hundreds of thousands more.
If donors decide not to give stock or crypto to your capital campaign, you’ll want to provide a low-fee way for them to give via credit, debit or ACH. Overflow’s cash product offers the lowest fees on the market. If you haven’t already added Overflow’s cash option to your giving suite, contact us to turn it on.
Do you need a confidence boost to ask big? Check out the Connected Accounts value in your Overflow Dashboard. This total shows the wealth your donors hold in their stock portfolios (at least of those that have connected a brokerage account through Overflow). If even a small portion of your donors have given stock gifts already, you’ll be encouraged by how much discretionary wealth is available within your donor base.
If your capital campaign is launching with an in-person event, use this game plan to exceed your fundraising goals!
#4. Consistently, Everywhere
We’ve found that for every 100 page views a client has, they generally receive 4 gifts averaging a total of around $35,000. If you're raising $1 million for a capital campaign, this means you need at least 2900 page views. That’s a lot of page views! The point here is that the communications you are sending on and offline have to lead givers to not only find your donate page, but actually donate through the links provided. How do you do this?
Churches have an incredible platform to speak about generosity every Sunday. Make sure to emphasize all the ways a churchgoer can give, and make it easy with a scannable QR code. For any other giving messages that goes out, whether over email, social media, etc., include a link back to your give page with all the ways to give. You'll have everything you need to make this all happen in the Church Launch Kit.
For nonprofits, you can drive the page views you need by including ways to give in every newsletter, every direct mailer, on your social media profiles, and more. Wherever you talk about giving, make sure to make it easy for the donor to reach your giving page and donate. Check out this verbiage to use across your fundraising channels.

You have activated Overflow, linked it on your website, shared it with supporters, and now you have your first stock gift. Awesome! Let's walk through what happens next.
⚠️ Before you go any further, we must warn you! Please DO NOT confirm receipt of a stock gift until it arrives in your hands. We know it is tempting to complete all the pending tasks in your Dashboard, but the date you choose as the gift receipt date is what populates in the donor's acknowledgment letter and therefore must be treated with caution. Stock gifts can take anywhere from 1 day to 2 weeks to process, and it isn't until the gift is fully processed and arrives in your account that it is officially yours.
Ok, now you're ready to dive in!
Stock Donation Receipt Timeline
DAY 0: Donor initiates a stock donation
When a donor clicks "Send Donation" on the Overflow platform, the stock gift transfer is initiated to your organization. All admins on your Overflow Account will receive an automated email alert letting you know a stock gift is on its way.DAY 0-1: Overflow processes the stock donation and executes on behalf of the donor
Once the gift is initiated, Overflow processes the gift. This can take up to 1 business day.DAY 1-10: The stock donation leaves the sending brokerage account and is transferred to the receiving organization's account.
This time frame varies based on the sending AND receiving brokerages. For example, if a donor sends a donation from Charles Schwab to Fidelity, it most likely will take about 3-5 business days. Stocks that are transferred with the same brokerage (Fidelity to Fidelity for example), can be processed in as little as 1 business day.- Charles Schwab (1-2 Business Days)
- Fidelity (3-5 Business days)
- Vanguard (5-7 Business days)
- Merrill Lynch (5-7 Business days)
- E*Trade (7-10 Business days)
- Wells Fargo (7-10 Business Days)
If any troubleshooting is necessary, Overflow's Donor Operations team will update the notes on the gift which you can view within the contribution history window in your Dashboard. We also may reach out directly via email. You can learn more about our Concierge Support here.
FINAL DAY: The stock donation arrives in your organization's account. 🎉The gift will arrive in your organization's account the same day it leaves the donor's brokerage account.
For liquidation clients, this means the stock will arrive in Overflow's brokerage account to then be processed for liquidation and sent as cash to your bank account. Our Donor Operations team will email add admins on your Overflow account with the important liquidation information you need to confirm receipt of the gift.
For brokerage clients, this is the final day of processing. Overflow does not have visibility into your brokerage account, so we won't be able to alert you when the stock arrives. We recommend monitoring your account daily if you want to liquidate the assets as soon as they arrive.
What Comes Next
You're now ready to confirm receipt of the donation! Click on the method you've chosen below to learn more:
Is your gift exceeding these timelines? Have a question about a donation? The Dashboard is the main place to check the status of your stock gifts. In the Contributions tab of the Dashboard, you can click any item to open the donation details window and view the gift's current status, history, and gift notes from Overflow's Donor Operations team.
Still have a question? Request a status update from your Dashboard or email our Donor Operations team at stockgifts@overflow.co.

Who is Overflow?
Overflow is a digital solution for donating non-cash assets, enabling donors to give in a tax-efficient way. Donors can experience the ease of giving via stock or crypto in less than five minutes from their mobile device. Overflow also provides givers access to a private Donor Profile which enables visibility into transaction history, transaction statuses, and the ability to update connected financial accounts.
Why should I donate stock or crypto?
Donating appreciated stock that you've held for over a year could allow you to save up to 20%* in capital gains taxes and potentially up to 37%** in federal income taxes on the charitable donation value of your gift based on your tax bracket when itemizing deductions. To understand the full tax benefits of giving appreciated stock, including potential state tax savings, please consult with your tax professional for information about your personal tax implications. Read more here.
How do I donate via Overflow?
Access the Overflow platform via a 501c3 organization giving page. Click "Stock", "Crypto", or "ACH/Debit/Credit" depending on the asset type you would like to donate. You will then be taken to the Overflow platform where you can follow the steps to complete the donation. Learn more about donating through Overflow here.
What can I expect after I submit my donation?
Immediately after submitting your donation, you will receive an email confirmation of your gift. Stock transactions take 2-14 days to reach our account depending on the sending and receiving brokerages that are involved in the process. Once the 501c3 organization receives your gift, they will send you an IRS-compliant acknowledgment letter that you can use to itemize the charitable deduction on your taxes. Learn more about what to expect after submitting a donation.
Is it safe to connect my brokerage and/or bank account to Overflow?
Overflow's Information Security Program is SOC 2 compliant, a widely respected information security auditing procedure. Overflow does not have access to nor stores any brokerage account usernames or passwords. They use Yodlee, a third-party provider, that handles the brokerage login process. Over 600 companies including PayPal, Mint, and Amazon use Yodlee to connect their clients’ accounts. For more information about Overflow's security practices, please see this article.
What types of shares can I donate?
You can give any shares that are publicly traded on the U.S. stock market through Overflow. By donating assets that have appreciated in value for more than one year, you are more likely to maximize the potential tax benefits. Learn more about the types of stock you can donate in this article.
Can I donate international gifts?
Each asset class, stock, crypto, and cash, has its own unique requirements and restrictions when it comes to international gifts. Read this article for more details about giving internationally from each asset class.
Can I give through my 401K or IRA?
Overflow can process all whole shares of publicly traded stock, including 401Ks and IRAs. However, because donors often incur penalties for withdrawing these assets before a certain date, we highly recommend consulting your tax professional before donating these types of assets. Donating 401Ks or IRAs could result in major tax penalties or even fewer tax benefits than donating cash.
Can I give company stock outside the trading window?
If you received company-distributed stock as an employee and the trading window is not open, your brokerage will likely reject the transfer request. We highly advise you to ask your company for the trading windows and give them during those time periods, which typically are open quarterly for 3 to 4 weeks at a time.
Does Overflow support gifts from my brokerage account?
Overflow currently supports over 10 brokerages via its self-guided platform including the most popular brokers such as Charles Schwab, Fidelity, and E*Trade. If Overflow doesn't have a direct connection to your brokerage account, your gift can still be fulfilled through their off-platform concierge service. (Learn more about this concierge service here). If you are donating through Overflow's donor experience and your brokerage account is not one of the 10+ currently supported with a direct connection, you'll be automatically connected with Overflow's Donor Operations team. You can also choose to opt into Overflow's fully-guided concierge service by emailing stockgifts@overflow.co.
*This assumes all realized gains are subject to the maximum federal long-term capital gains tax rate of 20%, and that the donor originally planned to sell the stock and contribute the net proceeds (less the capital gains tax) to charity. This does not take into account state or local taxes, if any.
**This assumes the top individual federal income tax bracket for a taxpayer that is itemizing tax deductions and does take into account Adjusted Gross Income limitations on charitable contributions. This does not take into account state or local taxes, if any.

A New Way to Give: Financial Advisor Experience
On the homepage of the new stock giving experience, you'll also notice a giving option for financial advisors. Overflow's Financial Advisor Giving Experience is a free feature that unlocks incredible impact for your organization. Donors that are interested in giving large stock donations usually have a financial advisor that manages these types of gifts on their behalf. Now, they can send your Overflow link to their financial advisors and you can track and manage these gifts within your Dashboard. Learn more here.
Dashboard Updates: Contribution History Made Clear
Welcome to a Dashboard that is more transparent and clear. In this latest update, we've revised the terminology for stock donation statuses and dates to make it more understandable where your gift is in the process. If you ever have any questions, you can always click on a gift to open the donation details window. Here, our Donor Operations team will keep you updated with personal notes as to the current status of the gift. You can also request the status of a gift by scrolling to the right of the contribution and clicking the ellipsis. Learn more here.

Payouts
This has been one of the most-requested features from our cash customers and we are so excited to announce that you can now access a record of all contribution fees and associated payouts directly within your Dashboard! With Payouts, you can reconcile cash processing fees and batched deposits with your bank statements. Learn more here.
Recurring Gifts Tracker
Recurring donations are one of the most desired types of giving because they represent consistent, reliable income for your organization. In the new Recurring Gifts section of your Overflow Dashboard, you can easily track who is giving on a regular basis and when their next gift will be. Learn more here.
Cash Acknowledgment Letters
For gifts over $250, the IRS requires that a donor be able to show an acknowledgment letter for that donation should they ever be audited. That's why we've made it easy for you to send cash acknowledgment letters on any donation valued at or above $250. Just like stock and crypto acknowledgment letters, these are automatically generated for cash gifts and can be sent directly from your Dashboard. Learn more here.

Corporate Stock Gift Matching

Revamped Donor Profile
Not only is the Donor Portal getting a new name, but it's getting a major facelift, not to mention net-new features! The new profile embodies Overflow's mission to inspire the world to give and focuses on celebrating a donor's generosity with a great giving summary on the home page. The profile also puts donation management back into the hands of donors and allows them to edit and delete recurring gifts, payment types, and contact information as well as view and download important tax documents.
