There is currently $234 billion in DAF accounts ready and able to be distributed to 501c3 organizations. Overflow's DAF giving solution allows you to tap into this fast-growing vehicle of philanthropy.
Sounds exciting but what, you ask, does DAF even mean? DAF = Donor Advised Fund, which is a specialized financial account used for charitable giving. It allows individuals to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then make grants to 501c3 organizations over time. You heard right - a donor can give in to their DAF account for tax purposes and then wait years to allocate the funds to a receiving nonprofit. Let's make this the year they distribute the funds to your deserving mission.
You may already be receiving DAF gifts in the form of EFTs or checks (DAFs currently make up 10% of all giving in the US), but there are three main problems with the current way to distribute funds from an individual's DAF:
- The current giving process is often cumbersome and there is no easy, secure, online way for an individual to give to an organization right from a website give page.
- DAF giving isn't always top of mind for donors when the option isn't readily visible, and yet you want to encourage individuals to give via DAF because these types of gifts are 39x larger than debit/credit donations.
- DAF gifts often arrive without any donor-identifying information, making it difficult to properly steward the giver.
Enter Donate from DAF by Overflow. Overflow has partnered with Chariot to make it possible for individuals to grant funds from their DAF to your organization online in less than 30 seconds. Donors can click the link on your website, log in to their DAF account (Chariot connects with the top 20 DAF providers), view the amount in their DAF, and request a grant. (Oh, and did we mention this is a free add-on to your Overflow subscription?!) Let's see it in action:
Or, let us take you step by step:
STEP 1. Choose an amount to give.
Fun Fact: The average DAF gift is almost $5,000!
STEP 2. Select where the funds should be designated, dedicate the donation, or add a message. Then, log in or create an account by entering your email or phone number.
STEP 3: Enter your personal information.
Fun Fact: If you're a repeat donor, the information will already be complete so you can just click "Donor Advised Fund" to continue.
STEP 4: Find your DAF provider.
Fun Fact: Through our partnership with Chariot, donors can choose from over 20 DAF providers!
STEP 5: Log in to your DAF account using Chariot.
STEP 6: Choose to increase your donation amount before submitting the donation.
STEP 7: Click submit and cue the confetti! Your donation is complete.
What happens next?
Once the donation is submitted, you'll see the gift with the status "Initiated" in your Dashboard under Contributions. It can take anywhere from 2 days to multiple weeks to process the gift, depending on the DAF account provider involved. Once the institution releases the funds, you will either receive a check or, in the case of a Fidelity DAF account, an EFT deposit to your bank account.
